Things I Love About Summer

Summer… three long, sultry, fun-filled months. And those summer nights made it a great time for a romantic fling. Er, for writing a romantic fling. Or reading one.

There’s something about the energy of long days and warm nights. Instead of running home before dark and hunkering down to avoid the cold, the heat of the day segues into a temperate night. Cooking means grilling and corn on the cob and s’mores around a campfire. Since there is still daylight, dinner transitions into outdoor activities.

My favorite things about summer:

Fireflies. Living in the country, it’s easy to see them when they rise from the garden at the edge of the yard. There’s nothing like the smell of fresh-cut grass, flowers, and the sight of the fireflies blinking like living stars.

Watermelon. Is there anything better on a hot day?

Thunderstorms. There’s something majestic about those angry-looking clouds rumbling across the sky.

Drive-in movies. We’re lucky enough to have one within reasonable driving distance. It’s a throw-back to another time, but it’s a great experience.

Porch swings. Yup, I’ve got one. It’s a great place to read, and a nice place to sit and think in the fresh air.

Concerts in the park. Whether it’s classical or rock ‘n roll, it sounds better in the great outdoors.

Summer romances. Reading is a passion for me, and there’s nothing better to take with me to the porch swing. A couple of guys, a helping of conflict, and I'm set.

What are your favorites?
